The Raconteurs - Brendan & Jack Finally Together

I have been waiting for this moment since I first heard of The Raconteurs project about a year ago. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about - The Raconteurs is a new band made by Brendan Benson and Jack White. With them they have Jack Lawrence on bass and Patrick Keeler on drums.

After listening to the two first tracks I would say that they sound more like Brendan than like Jack.

The full album "Broken Boy Soldiers" should be out in may 2006 - can't wait...

Figurines - Best Danish Band ?

No it's not the docopenhagen team dressed up as The Residents for Halloween. It's the Danish band Figurines.

The reason why I'm writing this post is that we recieved an email from from someone who calls himself "B" he writes:

"Why aren't Denmark's best band Figurines linked on your site? Their CD "Skeleton" might just be the best of the decade. No? Oh well. Their live show is amazing too. If you guys quit sniffing around Portland, Oregon so much and walk out your front door....you're gonna find music that'll put Denmark on the map finally! "

Well B - FYI Anders did link Figurines some time ago and I do not know what to say about the "best of the decade" thing...

Anyways... Figurines released their "Silver Ponds" in Canada and the US three days ago.

True hip hop - no sell outs

Today I came across NobodySmiling.com and saw their great archive of hip hop videos. Quite a few people have been accusing us of being hip hop haters here at DoCopenhagen, so I thought that it was time to prove them wrong.
In fact at least one of us has a past as a true b-boy. But that was before hip hop went mainstream and became the circus we know today. Back in the late eighties / early nineties hip hop was the new rock 'n roll, kind of like the indie rock wave these years.

Postal Service Vs. Apple + Ryan Adams concert mp3 download

Everybody is talking about the Apple-ad rip-off the Postal Service's video "Such Great Heights." Apparently both commercial and music video is produced by the same duo "Josh & Sander". Here is what Ben Gibbard (frontman in Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie) has to say:

"It has recently come to our attention that Apple Computers' new television commercial for the Intel chip features a shot-for-shot recreation of our video for 'Such Great Heights' made by the same filmmakers responsible for the original. We did not approve this commercialization and are extremely disappointed with both parties that this was executed without our consultation or consent."

Build To Spill was one of my favourite bands back in the 90'ties. I actually didn't expect to hear from them again. But then I found out that they have a new album titled "You in Reverse" out in April. It's a follow up to their 2001 album; "Ancient Melodies of the Future".
Their new track sounds pretty fucking great to me. I sure hope that they are going to put out an album that will bring them right back as among the leaders of indie rock.

The Music Genome Project

One of the results of the M.G. Project is an online music player called Pandora. You can use it for free and it's actually pretty fun to play with. About 40 people work full time describing about 400 attributes for each song that are analysed. At first I thought that this approach is totally overkill and it properly is. But it's funny to see what criteria's the genome project uses to pick new music for you. And there is some pretty cool stuff in there..

1. It's easy to get started, you don't need to register.
2. Just type in a song and Pandora starts playing.
3. Pandora will throw in other songs that sound like the one you choose.
4. When you tell Pandora weather you like the song or not, or if you add more songs Pandora will change its criteria's for selecting new music for you.

Tina Dico - Price winner from DK

Danish National radio P3 celebrated danish music anno 2006 tonight at the yearly P3 Gold show. The main price - the P3 award - was cleverly handed to lovely and talented singer/songwriter Tina Dico (formely known as Tina Dickow)
Dico's big break is just around the corner - monday brings the single "Warm Sand" to the UK shops, and the album "In The Red" pops up on the 24th in the states and UK. I've seen Tina Dico live many times now - and every time i fall even more in love with her.... just something about her!

Ramones 30 Year Anniversary

2006 is the 30th anniversary for a spectacular musical revolution. This year it's 30 years ago the first album, Ramones, came out as a fist in the dark. Four brats from Queens, NYC, had found a simple but sublime recepi of feeble-minded lyrics and speedie songs and by that gave punk to the world.

I bought my first album through Echospin a few days ago. I couldn't get my hands on it in any other ways and I had to have it. I had been listening to these two tracks from Finian McKean and got addicted:

I'm not sure how to describe how this guy sounds. It's one of those albums that sounds pretty uncool at first but then you realise you can't stop listening to it because it's kind of different, intense, unique and very organic.

José Gonzalez - Rotterdam Live MP3 Downloads

I decided that i wouldn't make any posts today, but then I found this on the Brooklyn Vegan blog.

Micke Orgel has put up 11 mp3 tracks from the José Gonzalez concert in Rotterdam. On this side of the Atlantic we have been listening Josés music for ages and now it is finally time for people in the US to enjoy this Swedish wonderboy. His EP "Stay In The Shade" is out in the US on the 24th of this month.

The Knife - Silent Shout

The Knife is back (Although it feels like they never really left...)
The followup to the spectacular album "Deep Cuts" will be out on Rabid Records in March. The first video will be available for download soon, and I'm really glad to see that it's directed by Andreas Nilsson. He's the guy who made the wicked Heartbeats-video from 2003. Rabid Records' server can't handle any traffic, so tunes and vids from the upcomming album are not available at the moment, but I found this rip of the first single "Silent Shout" on another server though... It's Internet man.

Starsailor - Live on KCRW

I was a huge fan of the Starsailor album "Love Is Here" - When they released their second album I was dissopointed to the bone (today I must admit that I didn't the album a fair chance).
I almost forgot about this Britsh band until I tuned in to the KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Show. After listening to the show I think that I'll give them another try. Their latest album "On The Outside" came out in the UK on the 17th October 2005 but hasn't been released in US yet.

Epo-555 - I can't wait

Epo-555 is one of Denmarks best kept secrets. The band released their debut album on Crunchy Frog Recordings back in 2004. This album is my opinion one the best Danish records ever released. Now it's 2006 and Epo has a new album called "Mafia" comming out on the 13th of Marts. The new album will be containing 10 songs including "Hyperschlieb", "Pizza Tintin" and "Harry Mämbourg" - I can't wait...

To those of our readers who has never heard of this band I recommend that you at least tjeck out the videos below or go to www.epo-555.dk and listen to a few released and unreleased tracks. Especially the video "Le Beat's on Fire" is highly recommended.

The Chrysler

Swedens The Chrysler released theire 3rd lp Cold War Classic a few month ago. I tell you guys, it's pretty good. Country-ish songs with lovely vocals, sparkling instrumentation, and sweetly insinuating hooks. Check out the video to the song, While the Tide is High, which is from an older album thoug, but I think the minimalism in the video is pretty unique. You can listen to some other great tracks right here!

The Black Angels

I was listening to the KEPX podcast (probably the best music podcast at the moment) and they played a song called "Black Grease" by The Black Angels. I've been listening to almost nothing else but Indie-Folk-Pop for last few weeks so this noisy band from Austin, TX, was definitely a nice surprise.

Their debut album "Passover" comming out on March 28th on "Light in the Attic Records". Watch out for it...

Between tours throughout 2005, SY have been working on new music for their next LP. Initial recording for this new LP has commenced at legendary Sear Sound Studio, where Sister and Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, and Thurston's Psychic Hearts were recorded. Songs recorded in the first days of the sessions linclude 'Pink Steam', 'Do You Believe in Rapture?', 'Or' and 'Sleepin Around'. Look for a release sometime in 2006.

Tom Brosseau on Fatcat

Folk singer Tom Brosseau has signed a contract with Fatcat Records. They have put together a compilation of his early recordings entitled "Empty Houses Are Lonely" which will be released on March 13th.

Tom made to the number 54 spot on the KEXP top 90.3 album of the year chart for his previous album "What I Mean To Say Is Goodbye"

Sci-Fi Skane

Some of you might be familar to the swedish band Bergman Rock who once were called Bob Hund. Now they're called Sci- Fi Skane, or atleast some of the members are. Check out the video to the song Vi kommer försent till bluesen. I don't really know what to say to this new elektro-synth-thing, and the video is almost discosting. But I guess the old Bob Hund boys deserves a little RESPECT!

13 days of Mixmas

If you haven't allready been, we here at docopenhagen encourage everyone to check out youaintnopicasso's awesome christmasproject "13 days of Mixmas ".
The concept were, in his own words;

"I've asked twelve people I respect musically to compile small mixes of five songs max. The catch is that all the tracks have to be united by some theme of their chosing. Some of these are people who I think have great taste in music, but the vast majority are musicians that you most likely enjoy. It's been interesting to me to get results back both as a blogger, but also as a fan. Some of these bands have really come up with some great themes and wonderful mixes."

There are mixtapes from some of docopenhagens absolute favorites such as Tapes 'n Tapes, John Vanderslice and Of Montreal.

This is a great idea and what a result. Respect!

At the moment Jenny Wilson is getting a lot of attention for her lovely debut album "Love and Youth". Frequent visitors to our site knows that Jenny used to play and sing in the Swedish band First Floor Power. Their album "Nerves" from 2003 is a must have for everybody who likes Jenny Wilson & The Knife.
