Best Of Sweden 2005

I was trying to do a top 10 of scandinavian bands of 2005 but then I realized that 9 out of 10 where from Sweden. So I decided to do a little "2005 Best of Sweden Compilation" instead... I probably missed some, but I've been up since 5.30 this morning thanks to my 2 month year old son Elliott - Must sleep... Can't think straight.

I "borrowed" two tracks from the wonderful site It's a trap... Hope it's ok Avi

Best Album 2005 Arcade Fire: Funeral

Everybody is doing lists at the moment, but I'll just put one single album on my list. Funeral is without a doubt the best LP from 05!

Check out a few great memories!

The Shins

Somehow I missed out on this amazing band the first time around, but after watching Garden State I have to agree with Natalie Portman; "You gotta hear this one song, it'll change your life I swear!". The song "New Slang" is from Their 2001 debut album "Oh, Inverted World".
This song just blows my mind!!

Flaming Lips and the Vines

Two releases I'm really looking forward to next year are the new album from the Flaming Lips album, "At War With The Mystics" witch is going to be released in April. It's supposed to be more electronic but yet more organic than "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" from 2002.
The other one is from the Vines. I'm not sure what the title is going to be. I hope that it's going to be as good as "Highly Involved" from 02. Their last album "Winning Days" from 04 was not the Vines at their best.

By the way I've been listening to this song all day. It's a cover version by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs of The Liars:

Mr. You're On Fire, Mr.

It's addictive.

New Years Eve Tip

OK - No plans for The Big Night yet? Here's a cool tip for the cool indie dude with a cool budget:
1. Hit the Groove ticket shop for a Giant Village '06 ticket
2. Jump on a flight to L.A
3. Hit a couple of record stores (support support)
4. Get pissed with Wayne Coyne and The Lips, Junior Senior, Death Cab for Cutie and shitloads of cool DJ's....
Only Setback: The Black Eyed Peas hits the main stage at some piont...

Mads Langer - Casual Cliché

I've earlier bragged about this dude - and to our international audience and users I'm proud to present Mads Langer.
Facts: Debut artist, 21 years old, talented like hell. Album coming out on Copenhagen Records this spring.

Casual Cliché - acoustic version.

Tiger Lou, a sell out?

It’s been written on this blog a couple of weeks ago. The new Tiger Lou album “The Loyal” is pretty disappointing. Apart from the album titled single “The Loyal”, there are only half a handful of decent tracks on it. I like “Ten Minutes to take off” though.

Living In A Box

"Am I living in a box - Am I living in a cardboard box" - these words gets a whole new meaning with this super cool video from Panther (don't really know if I like the music).

Watch the video (.mov)

Panther’s music is a hard match of damaged soul, falsetto disco and broken synth fueled freak-outs, which is as addictive as it is challenging. Vinyl version Contains full album on A-Side plus 2 DJ friendly dance versions on the B-Side.

First Impressions Of Earth

The new album from The Strokes has been floating around the Pirate Bay for a couple of weeks. I have been listening to it quite a lot and I have to admit that I like it more and more. In the beginning I thought that it had some kind of a The-Darkness-meets-Foo Fighters-flavour to it. But when you get more into it, its actually a really nice fresh album. The release date has been moved forward to January 2nd because of the pirate leak.If you haven't done so already, check out the video for the first single Juicebox that wasout December 5th.

David and the Citizens

One of my favourite Swedish bands, David and the Citizens has been signed by US label Friendly Fire. First release is a compilation EP with tracks from earlier releases in Scandinavia. Friendly Fire is also going to release their great album: Until Sadness is Gone. If you don't know the band you should take a listen to some of their songs right here.

Todd Snider - That Was Me / Ox

I remember back in 1995 when Mr. Buhl and I was listening to "Songs From The Daily Planet" by Todd Snider. 10 years Mr. Snider has released a "best of " album and is touring Europe this spring. On the 5th of may he is playing in Lille Vega (100 kr). This little video "On The Road With Todd Snider" (.ram) gives you an idea on what to expect.

I couldn't find any mp3s from the new album but here is a video "Alright Guy" and two old songs for you to enjoy.

THE KID - Kit Club Hotel

Woderful swedish record label Hybris has a new single out by The Kid.

Shout Out Louds

The shout out louds are the talk of the town everywhere outside of Scandinavia. In Scandinavia they are pretty old news, but hey, that doesn’t make their debut album “Howl Howl Gaff Gaff” less impressive. I went through my old DoCopenhagen updates, and last year at this time I made an update where I proclaimed that Howl Howl Gaff Gaff was my favourite album of the year. I haven’t regret this at all, actually I’ve heard the CD just as much In 2005, so who knows, maybe Howl Howl Gaff Gaff will sneak into my “CK’s top 5 albums of the year” again this year.

Our collegues over at So Much Silence have found some rare Shout Out Louds mp3s:

Please, Please, Please (acoustic version)
Shut Your Eyes (Acoustic version)

And these B-sides:

The battle is settled

As a Dane I always find it pretty amusing to follow the far out UK battle for the number one Christmas single. They really make a big fuss about it. You are even able to place bets on the different bands at the bookmakers. Unless something unforeseen happens this year winner is going to be the winner of the talent show X-Factor, Shayne Ward. I think that this just shows what all readers of DoCopenhagen already knows, the music charts are uninteresting and doesn't reflect all the cool stuff that has happened during 05.

By the way, I read a recommendation of Joanna Newsom at StereoGum.com and downloaded her album Milk-Eyed Mender from 04. I really like it so I'm going to recommend it also. You can download live versions of a bunch of her songs here.

First pop star in space

Moby is going to become the first pop star in space. The vegetable eating tree hugger has spent 207.000 USD on a ticket for the Virgin Galatic project.

The project is an initiative by the bohemian CEO of Virgin Richard Bransons. The plan is to fly a number of civilians, with too much cash, into outer space over the next 5-10 years.

Death Cab For Cutie - Directions

Docopenhagen darlings Death Cab For Cutie has a new interesting project comming up in 2006. I am to tied to write the post myself so I am going to do a little copy - paste from the Basuk website:

Death Cab for Cutie will be making a video for every song from their latest album, plans, in a project dubbed "Directions". DCFC's Nick says "We contacted a bunch of directors that we've sort of been familiar with and asked for submissions, and we said, 'Here's a small budget, go make a video for every song on the record.' It's going to be really exciting to see how it turns out, because the clips are just starting to leak in a little bit now and we're starting to get our first glimpse of some of the videos and we're so excited about how they're going turn out." Ryan Adams

Just in time, my favorite bad boy, Ryan Adams releases his, as promised, third album this year.
Entitled "29" (Ryans age), the album is an autobiography of his life from child to man.
Produced by Ethan Johns, "29" is his most stripped down album since his solodebut "Heartbreaker" (also produced by Ethan Johns).
So, isn't three albums in one year overkill?
Well, eventhough I really love Ryan Adams, I still think "heartbreaker" is his masterpiece, but after just one quick listen, "29" sounds pretty promising as a candidate to steal the title...

Piana - Sweet Japanese Indie Pop

Pianas new album "Ephemeral" is just the right thing for me on a sunday with the worst hangover ever.

Born in 1976, Piana is Naoko Sasaki, living in Morioka, Japan. Her musical activity began with Card Skepper, a collaboration with guitarist Yuichiro Iwashita who is now one half of the electro acoustic unit Minamo (cubic music, quakebasket, apestaartje, 360 records). Through participation on albums and live performances with World's End Girlfriend, she has been fascinating many people with her delicate, cute and unique voice and musical talent as Piana.

The Sony DRM scandal is still rolling

Here is a short summery:

  • Sony puts software for digital rights management on their CDs.

  • It's found out that the software uses root kit technology witch is a normally only used by hackers and virus writers for hiding software on a computer.

  • Sony doesn’t respond to any of the complains.

  • It's found out that the software "calls" back to Sony, telling them what CD's that are played on the computer and if any illegal music is played.

  • Finally after several months Sony Calls back all CDs with DRM software on them.

  • As a reaction to the whole story the neo indie country rockers from My Morning Jacket are giving away burned copies of their latest album Z to everybody who emails them to complain about the DRM on their album.

I hope that Sony really regrets the whole story and that the record companies have learned a lesson. After almost ten years of fighting illigal distribution of digital music they are still making the same mistakes. Instead of being progressive and thinking in new ways they keep up their pathetic fight.

The Cardigans

The Cardigans has just announced their first gig on their forthcoming tour will take place at VEGA in Copenhagen on the 1st of March. Their latest release "Super Extra Gravity" has really grown on me....actually, I really really dig it!

ps: thanks to the rest of the Docopenhagen team for a great christmas dinner...."det var dog utroligt så tør den fisk var, men rævestegen var suveræn!!"

Recommended Copenhagen gig

If you're in Copenhagen tonight, you should go to Loppen at Christiania. The two heavily linked Canadian Indie/Post Rock bands Broken Social Scene and The Most Serene Republic, are performing from 9 o'clock. It will cost you 100 DKK... You can't afford not to go.

Jose Gonzalez - Sony Advert

I guess that you already have seen the TV version of the beautiful Sony commercial, where thousands of colourfull bouncy balls fill the streets of San Fransisco, to the sound of Jose Gonzalez's "Heartbeats". Now you can watch the full extended version right here. The video is made by the danish photographer Nicolai Fuglsig.

Also, check out some Jose Gonzalez interviews and a concert clip here.

Clap your hands and say yeah

I've bought Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah’s self titled debut album, it’s absolutely brilliant! Nothing less than outstanding actually! I think that the tune Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood [mp3], is one of the absolute best tunes i’ve heard this year.
